While defining concepts ensures we speak the same language, defining elements is essential for designing and developing the actual enterprise.

What are Enterprise Elements?

Enterprise Elements are the building blocks of an enterprise. Unlike abstract concepts, elements are the concrete, discrete entities, actual units or parts that form the enterprise’s reality and how it operates.

Why are they important?

Because development often suffers when people use the same words but mean different things, or use different words for the same thing. When meanings are unclear, communication weakens. When communication weakens, cooperation suffers. And when cooperation suffers, the enterprise suffers.

Clear concepts create shared understanding.
Shared understanding improves communication.
Better communication enables better cooperation.
Better cooperation builds better enterprises.

When we agree on what we mean, we can think more clearly together. And when we think more clearly together, we develop the enterprise more effectively.

When we speak the same language, we work better together. Using a common terminology is vital because:

It creates clarity: We avoid the confusion and ‘translation errors’, lost in translation, that often happen between people from different background or expertise.

It builds trust: When everyone from leadership to developers uses the same names for the same things, we form a shared understanding of everything.

How to use them in practice?

Enterprise elements are practical tools that we use every day to design and develop a better enterprise. In practice, elements are used to design and manage change by connecting them into a seamless chain.

Planning Changes. When we start a new concept, project, transition program, or initiative, we define the desired requirements, descriptions or outcomes using these shared elements.

In practice, enterprise elements are used to build a common model of the enterprise. The same elements are used for the same things across disciplines and stakeholders. Differences between ideas become clearer, overlaps are reduced, and conversations become simpler, shorter, and more focused.

Enterprise elements serve as a shared blueprint for discussions, documentation, models, and daily development work. They help stakeholders see the behavior and structure of the enterprise in the same way. While elements themselves do not change the enterprise, their value lies in providing a clear, shared foundation – and this clarity helps people design and build the enterprise better, together.

Design & Development works better when we use the same words with the same meanings.

Background: Set Theory

Enterprise elements can be viewed as discrete elements in Georg Cantor’s Set Theory. Therefore, one should first clarify the drivers – answering the question: Why? This makes it easier to set goals that address these drivers, particularly the specific root causes.

Goals should be formulated to express both the subject (what is changing) and its qualitative characterisation (how it is changing). Thus, goals describe a qualitative change. A goal can be presented in the form: Subject + Qualitative Attribute. For example: ‘Improving customer satisfaction.’ Here, the keyword or ‘handle’ indicates the object of change, and the attribute indicates the nature of that change.

Once goals are set, we can derive outcomes from them. Outcomes express what has happened once the goals have been achieved. Outcomes are measurable, quantitative achievements or benefits that verify the realisation of the goals.

When setting goals, it is valuable to first analyse the root causes, the drivers: why a change is needed. This allows us to define the goals clearly, including the qualitative changes we aim to achieve.
